The Ann Arbor area is home to many fun and challenging disc golf courses. No matter what your skill level in the sport, you can find a great course around the area. The really great part about most of these courses are that they are completely free! Let’s take a look at a few of the more prominent courses in the area.
Water Works Park: If you are just starting out in disc golf, there is not a more straight forward course than Water Works Park. It offers a nine hole course that is fairly open, is fairly forgiving on beginners and best of all is completely free. Just be sure to watch out on holes number two and three as they hug the Huron River and more than one disc has went in the drink, never to be seen again. The main downside to this park is that it is sometimes difficult to know where the tees and pins are, as there are no markings anywhere. If you do decide to go to Water Works, be sure to take a friend that’s been there before.
EMU Disc Golf Course: Another good beginner course that is free to play on is the EMU Disc Golf Course. This course is located next to the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center and is a nine hole course. Most of the pins are in an open field, allowing you to really throw long drives and there are not to many obstacles to go around.
Rolling Hills: If you have a season or two under your belt, one of the top intermediate parks in the area to visit is Rolling Hills. It offers a fully wooded 18 hole course for anyone looking for a challenge. This is a tournament spot for the pro disc golf association as well, so you will constantly see players there practicing that are willing to offer tips to other players. The only downside to this course is that it costs to enter the park. The cost is $ 5.00 if you are a resident of Washtenaw county, and $ 9.00 if you are not. One word of advice here; the cost is per car and only the driver has to show their ID. Be sure to have someone from Washtenaw county driving to save yourself a few dollars.
These are just a few of the excellent disc golf courses in the area. If I had to choose just one course to go to it would be Rolling Hills, even if I were a beginner. The course is challenging and you can’t beat the 18 wooded holes. It’s like a little nature trip every time you go out there. Have fun this summer and keep ’em spinning!
